Kalamkari an ancient art of hand painting





What is kalamkari 

Kalamkari is an ancient art and style of hand or block printing on a piece of cotton or silk fabric made cloth. Kalamkari is an art performed in Iran and Indian states Andhra and Telangana. A pen made of temrind wood is used to perform this art with natural colors and dyes. Kalamkari word here refers to Kakam (pen) and kari (c raftmanship). The natural colors for this are made or prepared at home with natural organic colors.

Origion of Kalamkari Craft





Kalamkari art and craft was begin in some rural areas of Andhrapradesh as an household craft used to make sarees. In the later years it was moved from generation to generation with getting more imrovement and as skilled craft. Kalamkari became much popular when it turned to ancient hindu methology and after that during mughal era this craft approached to new heighs and got commercial approach both in domestic and international markets.

Types of Kalamkari




There are two unique and destentive styles of kalamkari art in India are known as srikalahasti in which kalam is used to perform the art and second machilipatanam in which block printing by natural organic colors.


Kalamkari craft includes flowers, birds, old houses , nature scenes and characters from mahabharat, ramayan and chalchitra. Kalamkari is done on cloth by making beautiful story telling scenes of pictures drawn in it.




How the Kalamkari printing is done 



Process to perfom this art is completed in 23 steps. The entire process involves fom bleaching the fabric by cow dung and flower leaves then soften it and drying in sun dry. The next step is to prepare natural dye colors . Entire process is done with hard hand working. Fabric is processed with buffallow milk and some other natural organic materials. It is washed again and again to make the fabric soft. Ultimately the fabric is dyed with the desired colors. Now it is ready to proceed for painting.

Phulkari embroidery

Phulkari embroidery a traditional craft and status symbol

Phulkari is the traditional embroidery technique and hand art of Punjab, where phulkari word means  flowers. Punjab ,some parts of Haryana and a little in Himachal Pradesh is known for phulkari.
It is not only an embroidery, it is sign of love and affection which is made by ladies for their family members from newly born baby to old aged persons in dupatta, shawl, ladies suit and chadar styles from routine use to special occasions as shown in design and style it can be understood. Phulkari was never fabricated to sell.

Phulkari for the people of punjab is not just an embroidery , it is a traditional family culture, a pious ceremony which begins with the birth of a baby in family. Grandmother of the baby wave this with her fingers. 

Origin and history

The word phulkari indicates the craft of flowers made by hand with silk threads on clothes which is  combination of phul and kari, Here phul is said to flowers in punjabi and kari means craft. Phulkari work is done at the wrong side of cloth that come to right side finished.The work is done on full part of cloth or divided into parts like a flower garden according to design with colored silky threads by needles. The most favored colors in phulkari are red and yellow.

Phulkari art have even not any recorded or written history but said to be five hundred years old culture which is original of Indian culture found and created by punjabi community. Theme of which is based on flowers and garden specially.

Types of phulkari


Bagh Phulkari

In punjabi language bagh is said to a garden, so that bagh phulkari is done during ceremonies on a peace of  khaddar cloth as in garden shape in which the ground colors are no longer visible at all and the embroidery itself become fabric looks like a garden.

Silver and golden threads are used in this pattern.

Surajmukhi

The main part of this embroidery indicates a Sunflower, colors used in this are same as in a natural Sunflower.

Senchi 

This pattern of embroidery includes and indicate to birds and different items of  jewelry like necklaces, bracelets, earrings etc. The sanchi is done specially around Ferozpur area.

Neelak

This embroidery pattern is made of red or black background with yellow or bright red silky threads in metal colors mixing.

Bengali Craftsmen belong to the West Bengal are known highly skilled for carving work as in wood. Every where in India they have make their significant presence in this industry.  

Kinds of wood used in making furniture and handicraft:-

Rosewood also known as Sheesam which is hard wood like teak ,said Indian teak-wood is available in different parts in India as in Rajastha, Punjab, Haryana, Bihar some parts of Uttar Pradesh and a little in northern eastern India.

Teak wood is not available in India to fulfill its demand, so it is being imported from African countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Sudan, Costa Rica and Brazil. The main production areas for teak-wood in India are Madhya Pradesh, Assam and some parts of South India.

As the growing population of our country and demand from the overseas markets some another kind of soft and hard woods have been used for the last some years as pinewood, mango wood, neem wood and some kind of local woods.
